Causes of Chronic Hives
Chronic hives are batches of raised red or white itchy welts that vary in sizes and shapes. These hives appear and go away but recur frequently and mostly last for more than six months. The main cause of chronic hives is still not identified. In some cases, it can be related to an underlying autoimmune disorder, such as thyroid or lupus. The chronic hives is uncommon. About 1 in 1000 people develops this urticaria at some stage in their life. This hive is twice more common in women than men. Symptoms of chronic hives:Chronic hives appear as small, round wheals large patches that may change shape. Person with chronic hives can experience itch and may be surrounded by a red flare. It occurs in batches and often appears on the face or the extremities. Symptoms of chronic hives can not occur all the time. The hives might come and go with no apparent trigger. Certain conditions, such as heat, exertion or stress, can make the chronic hives symptoms worse. Chronic hives can last form30 minutes to 36 hours. As some hives fade away, new hives can develop. About 40 % of chronic hives patients also suffer from angioedema. The common signs of angioedema are large welts or swelling of the skin that may occur around the eyes, lips, hands, feet, inside the throat and genitalia. The swelling in throat can be hinder breathing and might require emergency treatment. If you experience difficulty in breathing, swelled throat, appearances of hives for more than a couple of days, severe hives then immediately see your doctor. Causes of chronic hives:Chronic hives are caused when certain cells release histamine and other chemicals into your bloodstream, resulting small blood vessels to leak. The exact reason of chronic hives is still not identified. Chronic hives are supposed to be caused by an immune system disorder and may be associated to another health problem, such as thyroid or lupus. A reaction to medication, food, insect bite, parasites or infection is identified as a cause of chronic hives. But in most cases, the cause of chronic hives is not at all identified even after testing and observing symptoms. Cold, heat, pressure, sunlight or other environmental stimuli can worsen chronic hives. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen also can worsen chronic hives. Treatment for chronic hives:The Symptoms of chronic hives can be treated effectively in most people with prescription medications. Your doctor might prescribe you oral antihistamines as these medications block the symptoms producing release of histamines. However, these medications do not treat the underlying cause of the rash. You might require antihistamines every day. Some of antihistamines are available without prescription while others might require a prescription. Your doctor might prescribe you low sedating antihistamines such as fexofenadine, loratadine, cetirizine desloratadine and levocetirizine. Other medications that your doctor can prescribe if antihistamines alone don’t relieve your symptoms are H2 antagonists, oral corticosteroids, epine phrine, leukotriene receptor antagonists, cyclosporine, omalizumab according to individual’s need.
