Facial Hives
Facial hives are raised, itchy welts of different sizes that seem to just appear and disappear on your skin. Angioedema is a type of facial hives in which the large welts are located deeper into your skin, particularly near your lips and your eyes. In most of the cases angioedema and facial hives do not cause harm and they will not leave any lifelong marks, even when you do not have them treated. The most common treatment for facial hives is antihistamine medications. However, if the angioedema is severe then it can be life threatening if the swelling causes your tongue or your throat to obstruct your breathing and leads to you losing consciousness. Symptoms of Facial HivesThe symptoms of facial hives are raised welts of different sizes that can be red or white, one large welt or groups of welts that cover big areas of your face, welts that resolve when new welts become visible, a stinging or burning feeling in the area of the face that is affected by welts, and itching that can be very troublesome. Facial hives can either be acute or chronic. The reaction of acute facial hive might last from a few hours to several weeks however; the reaction is usually less than six weeks. In chronic facial hives, the reaction lasts for over six weeks. Usually facial hives are not life-threatening; however, if you feel like your throat is swelling, feel lightheaded or if you have difficulty in breathing, you will need to seek emergency care. In other cases, you can likely treat facial hives at home. Angioedema is a type of facial hives that occurs more deeply in the skin. The symptoms of angioedema include a swelling of the skin, thick, large, and very firm feeling welts, blisters in the areas where there is severe swelling, pain and warmth in the affected areas, and difficulty in swallowing and breathing in severe cases. Angioedema mostly occurs near the lips or eyes at times, it can occur on the genitalia, feet, hands, or even inside your throat. Angioedema and facial hives can occur at the same time or separately. Causes of facial hives:Facial hives can be caused by an allergy or another reason you may not be familiar with. Since it is usually unidentified what triggers facial hives. Factors such as stress, heat, cold and sunlight can lead to hives. Reactions to foods such as shellfish, medications and other allergenic substances can also be the reason of facial hives. Treatment for facial hives:When you first experience a facial hives outbreak, it is significant for you to determine how severe it is. Facial hives on the eyes, throat and mouth can be hazardous and require immediate medical aid. Medication such as antihistamine can be used of you are facing mild outbreak on face. The disadvantage of this medication is that they can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Severe cases of facial hives require injection of epinephrine or corticosteroids.
