Hives or urticaria is raised, red itchy welts that appear in clusters on the skin. It can develop on arms, legs, face, trunk, scalp, hand and feet. Hives attack often starts with an intense itching of the skin that quickly erupts into small welts. They can also appear in one place, fade and then reappear somewhere else. Hives are mostly caused by an allergic reaction. It is caused when the mast cells in the body produce histamine, which causes the capillaries to become leaky. The escaping fluids get trapped under the skin and leads to swelling and itching. Hives can continue to reoccur for up to six weeks. In some more chronic cases, they are last even longer.

Hives can appear by anything that can cause an allergic reaction. We can react by eating, touching and inhaling something. Common allergens that cause hives are medications, foods, additives and preservatives, animal dander, insect bites, exposure to chemicals, pollen and mold. At times physical and emotional stress can also result in hives. Although hives are not life threatening but it is often very uncomfortable to the victim. Fortunately, there are many natural healing methods you can perform to lessen or eliminate hives.

Natural treatment for hives:

  1. Maintain a hive diary and record what you have eaten, where you are, how you were feeling just before the hive attack and what you were doing.
  2. Avoid wearing tight cloths as it can rub against the affected area and cause them to spread as well. Therefore it is advisable to wear loose fitting cloths in order to help lessen flair-ups.
  3. Don’t scratch the affected area as it is believed that itching hives can actually increase a flair-up and cause them to spread even more.
  4. Meditation, yoga or deep breathing can ease the discomfort experienced with hives.
  5. If you feel that allergies are causing hives then you should identify triggers and avoid future outbreaks.
  6. Food that can trigger hive attack should be avoided. Food such as cured meat, diary products, eggs, alcohol and chocolate should be avoided.
  7. Aloe vera gel can be applied on the affected area to sooth itching and burning.
  8. Herbs can help you to reduce the inflammation and pain caused by hives. You can use herbs such as St. Johns wort, horsetail, peppermint, lemon balm, valerian.
  9. Add a handful of oatmeal, cornstarch or baking soda to a warn bath as this will help to reduce the itching and inflammation of hives.
  10. Herbs such as green tea, chamomile and wild oregano have been believed to have an antihistamine effect in the body.
  11. Vitamin C helps people with hives whereas Vitamin B12 helps to reduce the severity of an attack as well as reduce their frequency.
