Types of hives
Hives or urticaria is the red, raise and itchy area of skin that appears in different shapes and sizes. The range of hives area varies form few millimeters to several inches in diameter. Instances of hives are very common sand can attack individuals of any age, race or gender at any time. Generally hives appear as red lesions and can form suddenly over the course of several hours. The hives are different types, however the most common types of are mentioned below.
Types of hives:
- Acute hives: This type of hives usually becomes noticeable a few minutes after contact with allergen. The reaction of this hive might last from a few hours to several weeks. The reaction is usually less than six weeks. This hives are noticeable only for a few days. The acute hives are usually caused due to food allergen. In some cases the cause of acute hives is usually not found. Common foods that cause acute hives are nuts, shell eggs, fish, and acid derivatives. Other allergen of acute hives can be medication or wasp stings or skin contact with certain fragrances.
- Chronic hives: this hives appear daily or almost daily for at least six weeks or more. The chronic hives can persist for a long time. Severe case of chronic hives can last up to 20 or more years. The particular cause of chronic hives is rarely found.
- Drug induced hives: Drugs that cause hives are aspirin, penicillin, sulfonamides, anti convulsants and anti diabetic drugs like suphonylurea.
- Physical hives: This hives are caused when something stimulates the skin. Mostly it is caused by scratching. This hives are also known as dermatographism. It can also be caused due to cold or heat, sunlight, exercise, pressure, or water. the person with this hive have the appearance of wheals or welts on the skin as a result of rubbing, scratching. The skin reaction of this hive generally appears soon after the rubbing and disappears within thirty minutes.
- Cholinergic hives: This hive tends to develop after an individual exercise, sweat or any perform any activity that leads to warmness. This hives are very small and spread between two and three millimeters of diameter. Generally it appears on the upper body. This hives are a cause of the body temperature rising and can be caused due to warm or hot baths or showers. They mostly last for thirty minutes.
- Aquagenic hives: This type of hive is usually caused by contact with water and generally appears within 15 minutes after the skin touches the water. it is supposed that it is not caused by the water itself but by a reaction to the chemical inside the water. This hives are last up to two hours before disappearing.
- Solar hives: It is also a rare type of hives that is caused on areas that have been exposed to sun. it begins to develop almost immediately after the individual steps into the sun and will disappear about an hour after the exposure. Treatments of solar hives are antihistamines, sunscreen and complete sun avoidance.
