Viral hives in children
Hives or urticaria is the red raised bumps, often itchy on the surface of the skin. They develop suddenly and may appear and leave for a random period of time. It can be caused by exposure to an allergen or an insect bite, viral infection or underlying disease. The hives that are caused due to viral infections are known as viral hives. There is no need to visit the physician unless the hives are accompanied with fever or joint pain, swelling of mouth or tongue and breathing difficulty as this is an indication of deadly allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. Children can prevent themselves form hives by avoiding the known allergens. These include environment allergens, food allergens like shell eggs, nuts or milk can be the cause of hives in children. Viral hives in children can be treated with topical treatments like cool compresses and hydrocortisone cream. If the hives are caused through illness, then you should take prescription remedies to control them. Epinephrine shots should be used for a severe allergy attack to treat the hives. Treatment of viral hives in children:In most cases it has been found that viral hives in children usually run its course for a certain period of time and disappear itself. There are medications available to provide relief from the irritation caused due to viral hives. Calamine lotions or Milk of magnesia can be used to treat viral hives in children. They help in reducing the itchiness and provide instant relief. The hives which have been caused due to sun exposure, apply sun screen lotion to treat that hives. Benadryl or similar anti-histamine drugs can be directed in order to reduce the intensity of hives in children. The amount of dosage should be administered as it depends on the age and weight of the children. Apart from medicines, there are a number of effective home remedies for viral hives in children. Ice can be applied on the affected area in order to reduce the swelling and itchiness. You can also apply aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil to the affected area. The room temperature should be kept normal; not too hot or too cold.
