Cholinergic Hives Treatment

The best way to treat cholinergic hives is to prevent it from occurring. For this you will have to take some preventive measures which are discussed below.

  • Avoiding situations that will cause a sudden increase in body temperatures. Exercise, saunas, hot showers, going out when it's hot is all stimuli for an increased body temperature.
  • Wear appropriate and loose fitted clothing to keep the body cool.
  • Avoid eating spicy food - this can increase body temperature thereby causing cholinergic hives.
  • Use ice packs or cooling sprays to resolve looming reactions.
  • Exercise/Sweat Therapy – People having mild cholinergic hives can practice exercise therapy. In this form of therapy, a person will use regular exercise to induce frequent attacks of cholinergic hives. In doing so, the body develops tolerance to the triggering agent and thus preventing the person from more severe attacks. Those with severe forms of cholinergic hives cannot use this therapy.

With the onset of cholinergic hives there is requirement to treat it clinically. Below are some treatment methods for cholinergic hives.

  • Antihistamines to treat Cholinergic Urticaria -Antihistamines are medicines that serve to block the release of histamine in the body. Histamine is the main reason for the outbreak of hives. You can either use an over-the-counter medicine or a prescribed medicine. Some of the commonly used antihistamines are Zyrtec, Claritin, Benadryl, hydroxyzine and Clarinex. Taking either of these will help alleviate cholinergic hive symptoms.
  • Anabolic Steroids to treat Cholinergic Urticaria -Steroids are usually prescribed in more severe forms of cholinergic hives. It may provide relief from cholinergic hives but may have harmful side-effects.
  • Corticosteroids creams to treat Cholinergic Urticaria -Corticosteroids creams can be used on the affected areas to help with skin inflammation and other hive symptoms.
  • UVB Light Therapy for treating Cholinergic Urticaria - This form of therapy is used sometimes to treat cholinergic hives. This form of treatment is given by a dermatologist. You can speak with your doctor to learn about the benefits and risks of this therapy.
  • Benzoyl Scopolamine and Oral Scopolamine Butylbromide - This is an anti-cholinergic medicine which is prescribed to treat cholinergic hives as it helps in preventing cholinergic activity. This line of treatment has negative side effects and hence must consult a doctor before taking these medications.
  • Anti-Depressant Medication - Anti-depressants can be given if the patient is distressed or anxious because of suffering from cholinergic hives.
  • Anti Itch Lotion or Moisturizing Creams - An anti-itch lotion can be used to soothe itching sensation caused due to cholinergic hives. However, these creams will not stop the hives attack.
